East Coast Greenway
The East Coast Greenway Alliance, a national non-profit organization, was formed in 1991 when cyclists and trail enthusiasts from New England and the Mid Atlantic states met in New York City. They shared a vision for linking existing and planned trails to make a contiguous spine route between cities along the east coast, and formed an organization to plan and promote the greenway. They set as their first goal an "exploratory" tour during the summer of 1992. Nine cyclists from Boston, New York, Vermont, and Washington, D.C. made a 30-day, publicity-laden journey. The contact made with local residents and officials laid the foundation for moving forward with forming greenway committees in each of the individual states.
