RIPTA PUTS SPECIAL BUS SERVICE IN PLACE TO ASSIST COMMUTERS AFFECTED BY SUSPENSION OF MBTA COMMUTER RAIL SERVICE SOUTH OF PROVIDENCE ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2015

February 18, 2015

Press Releases

For the second day in a row, the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is providing special service today to assist commuters affected by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) decision to suspend commuter rail service south of Providence.

As it did last week when the MBTA also suspended service to the two commuter stops south of Providence (the intermodal station connected to T.F. Green Airport in Warwick and the Wickford Junction station in North Kingstown), RIPTA is providing buses to connect commuters from those points to the Providence train station where MBTA service is still running to Boston.

Working with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT), RIPTA has coordinated this emergency service to coordinate with times that the trains would normally be running.

RIPTA does not yet know if the MBTA suspension of service to points south of Providence will continue Thursday, and is staying in touch with the appropriate officials and will update commuters accordingly.

The schedule for today’s (Wednesday, February 18, 2015) special supplementary bus service is listed below. The train route number is included in parentheses to help commuters identify their usual trips:

  • Bus leaves Providence train station at 2:54 p.m.; arrives in Warwick at 3:14 p.m.; arrives in Wickford at 3:31 p.m.  (Train 809)
