Press Releases

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority announced today that it  will be joining other public transportation organizations nationwide for “National Dump the Pump Day” on Thursday, June 21, 2018.    Commuters should keep an eye out for RIPTA’s Commuter Resource RI (CRRI) team as they visit various Park-n-Ride locations to surprise RIPTA passengers with prizes. RIPTA is also inviting customers to show their support of alternate commuting modes by taking a picture of themselves on a bus, commuter train or bike, and then uploading their photos to social media with the hashtag #DumpThePumpRI.

Started in June 2006 when gas prices were close to what they are today, Dump the Pump day is a national event that highlights the many benefits of public transportation – from saving money and fuel, to benefiting the environment. “All indications are that gas prices will be high this summer, so this is a great time to ‘dump the pump’ and try public transit,” said Barbara Polichetti, Director of Public Affairs for RIPTA.  “We hope our passengers enjoy our ‘Bus Stop Blitz,’ as we thank them for riding with us, and we also work to catch the attention of new customers who are looking to save on fuel costs. We want everyone to know that public transportation – whether it’s bus or commuter rail – is a great alternative to single-occupancy vehicle use. Although supporting public transportation is the main focus of “Dump the Pump” day, it’s also a day to focus on other eco-friendly commuting alternatives such as such as carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking or even telecommuting.”

According to a recent report from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), individuals in a two-person household can save more than $9,894 on average annually by downsizing to one car. Additionally, public transportation is a cornerstone of local economies in urban, suburban, and rural communities. In fact, a public transportation system helps to make a community economically prosperous and competitive.  Every $1 invested in public transportation generates approximately $4 in economic returns, powering community growth and revitalization, according APTA.

Commuter Resource RI, an outreach component of RIPTA, is a program designed to promote commuting alternatives.  If anyone is interested in learning more about the resources available to help “dump the pump,” they can email  commuter@ripta.com or visit trytransitri.com.
