Hearings Scheduled July 28 through August 6 in Barrington, Providence, Woonsocket, West Warwick, Warwick, Pawtucket, Newport, and South Kingstown
Providence, Rhode Island – The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) will hold public hearings on proposed service reductions in all five Rhode Island counties starting on July 28 and continuing through August 6, 2025. The Authority announced that the reductions in service statewide are part of the cost controls it is imposing to manage a $17.6 million dollar deficit for FY 2026, which began on July 1, 2025.
The proposed cuts would affect a total of 58 bus routes, including 4 Flex zones and 6 Park & Ride routes, and would include the following changes: eliminating entire routes or route segments and decreasing service frequency. Proposed service changes will affect Routes 1, 3, 4, 6, 9x, 12x, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 50, 51, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59x, 60, 61x, 63, 64, 65x, 66, 68, 69, 71, 72, 73, 75, 76, 78, 80, 87, 88, 89, 92, 95x, 203, 231, 281, 301 and the R-Line.
“A first-class transit system is essential for driving economic development in our state. Unfortunately, revenues have not kept up with operating costs and with federal COVID relief funding being fully spent, the Authority must now amend our services to align with the resources we have,” said RIPTA Chief Executive Officer Christopher Durand. “We’ve reduced the deficit to $10 million through one-time federal reimbursements, revised gas tax estimates, fuel lock savings, and reallocating federal funds.”
Recent action by the General Assembly in the state’s enacted budget to increase the gas tax, along with internal cost-saving measures, has helped reduce RIPTA’s budget deficit and lessen the number of proposed service cuts.
Under the direction of Governor McKee and the General Assembly, RIPTA underwent an efficiency study that reviewed its service and funding model, and comparisons to other like transit agencies. The study found no major deficiencies that would prevent a reduction in service. RIPTA is reviewing the study materials prepared to date and is taking into consideration recommendations from the study into the Agency’s service reduction plan.
“While the timely implementation of these service changes is necessary, we will continue to do everything we can to preserve services that help people get to work, educational and training opportunities, and medical appointments. As we prepare for these changes, please monitor our website closely for trip cancellations and service disruptions. We remain committed to providing reliable service and a positive customer experience,” Durand added.
In addition to service reductions, RIPTA is also considering a fare increase. Before making any changes, the Authority will conduct a comprehensive fare study to analyze potential impacts on ridership, revenue, and equity. The study will help determine whether fare adjustments could be implemented in a way that supports the agency’s long-term financial sustainability while minimizing hardship for riders.
The proposed service reductions include the elimination of routes, or route segments, or service as follows:
