Pilot Fully Funded by the RI Executive Climate Change Coordinating Council
Providence, Rhode Island – The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is inviting multifamily residential property owners and managers to participate in a new Residential Transit Pilot Program, an initiative designed to provide transportation benefits to tenants. The pilot program aims to promote sustainable travel choices and reduce reliance on personal vehicles, especially in communities already well-served by public transit.
Through this pilot, RIPTA will offer property owners and managers the ability to order free monthly transit passes for residents, giving them the gift of free transportation in December 2025 and January 2026.
“By partnering directly with multifamily property owners and managers, we’re helping residents experience the convenience and value of public transportation in communities that are already transit-accessible,” said RIPTA Chief Executive Officer Christopher Durand. “This initiative makes it easier for more people to choose transit over driving.”
“This initiative brings together housing and transportation in a way that supports both our climate goals and our residents’ daily lives,” said RIEC4 Chair and DEM Director, Terry Gray. “By making transit more accessible to those living in multifamily housing, we’re investing in a future that’s more affordable, sustainable, and convenient for everyone.”
This new initiative is funded by the Executive Climate Change Coordinating Council (EC4) pursuant to its FY2025 Spending Plan. The EC4 receives funding through RI’s proceeds from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). This pilot program is fully grant-funded and does not draw from RIPTA’s operating budget.
