Press Releases

Due to the permanent closing of Huxley Avenue in Providence, the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) will restructure Route 55 (Admiral/Providence College) beginning Wednesday, May 18, 2016. Providence College will permanently close the College-owned portion of Huxley Avenue (Eaton Street to Ventura Street) to all vehicular traffic on Wednesday, May 18TH.

Route 55 will no longer service Eaton Street or River Street.  Trips will continue straight on Admiral Street through to Smithfield Road, without turning onto Huxley Avenue, Eaton Street or River Avenue. Once construction is completed later this summer, RIPTA will restructure Route 55 again to serve the Providence College campus.

Huxley Avenue, between Eaton Street to Ventura Street, will be permanently closing as part of Providence College’s Campus Transformation Project. Triggered by the College’s 2013 purchase of most of Huxley Avenue from the City of Providence, the Campus Transformation will unify the campus with improved ways to move throughout the community for both pedestrians and drivers.
